Choosing the Right Shutters for Patio Doors

Patio doors have different requirements than windows in that they need to be able to be moved out of the way to allow for traffic. For years verticals have dominated the patio door market. Clients that are looking for an updated look and are tired of the little chains, tend to gravitate towards window coverings with horizontal lines. Aluminum “mini” blinds do not tend to stand up well to patio door traffic and get bent out of shape easily. Two inch wood or ‘faux’ wood blinds are much too heavy to pick up for patio doors and can have up to a 10 inch “stack” at the top which some people would have to duck to get under.

For a very clean look, many of our clients are going with shutters. Either wood, or vinyl shutters can fold back against the wall for easy access to the door. Generally we bi-fold 2 panels to fold to the left side and 2 panels to the right. Patio doors are often found in high traffic areas and therefore require additional cleaning. Shutters can be easily cleaned with a damp rag or a non-abrasive cleaner for tougher spots. In a home with young children or pets, consider vinyl shutters for additional durability. Vinyl shutters will not chip when a toy or a chair hits up against them.
